Market Assessments

Market Assessments are crucial to determining whether or not to invest valuable resources - time, money and personnel - to enter a new market or to begin a new venture.

Examples of market assessments undertaken for clients include:

  • An energy demand management market survey and analysis to test the potential for a remote energy demand management software system geared to saving major retailers electrical energy costs. The survey indicated a limited market potential for the product and service in North America. A corporate decision was made to sell the assets to a strategic partner, thereby recouping the original investment and avoiding further costs.

  • A market survey and analysis of the use of internet technology to market, sell and support a hydropower plant operations and maintenance program sold throughout North America. The study confirmed the viability of investing further resources in the development of the program into an Internet-based application, and in structuring the business plan for the program.

  • An assessment of the Northeast U.S. power market, including changes and trends taking place as a result of power deregulation in the U.S. and the new and emerging challenges, opportunities and strategies for the company. The study provided the basis for the company's U.S. expansion and a critical strategic partnership.

  • Assessment of the European market for a revolutionary new system of continuous production of cheeses, soy foods and other food products requiring a heat and acidification process. The equipment is now being sold successfully.

  • Analysis of the international capital projects marketplace for a major government agency. The study included surveys of companies with international project experience and success. The study identified keys to success and areas where public policy and program changes were required to help firms compete more effectively.

  • Survey and assessment of the Information Technology (IT) skills and training requirements of industries in the Toronto area for a leading community college. The study resulted in the deferment of a planned capital investment.

  • And others.

Feasibility and Due Diligence Studies
Feasibility and Due Diligence studies are essential before undertaking planned investments. Examples of studies we have undertaken for clients related to:
  • A joint venture to manufacture plastic cards in India (feasibility proven)
  • The development of a national database system for two Southeast Asian countries (feasibility proven)
  • A joint venture to manufacture and sell pre-fabricated houses in Sri Lanka (feasibility proven)
  • The establishment of a new IT training facility in the Peel-Halton area of Ontario (feasibility not proven)
  • And others.

We organise and/or participate in specialised project study teams, usually performing the market assessment and project management roles. Studies typically involve an analysis of the market and market potential; investment incentives, regulations and laws; strategic and joint venture partnerships and agreements; raw materials supply, inputs and costs; sales pricing; location; legal and tax issues; social impacts; training needs and plan; environmental impact assessment; return on investment and other factors.

Working with client firms, we also make applications for study support through CIDA's Industrial Cooperation Program, which have generated between $100,000 and $360,000 of grant money to help fund the studies.

Business Planning
Strategic business planning is essential for all companies, particularly those which are looking to expand, domestically or internationally, and to improve their operations.

We specialise in strategic business planning, and assist with implementation. Our approach is based on sound research and analysis, working in close partnership with our clients. Often the business planning process involves a customer satisfaction survey to test the company’s performance in an objective manner, and to validate corporate value propositions. Business plans undertaken for clients have resulted in organizational changes to improve efficiencies and effectiveness, new product or service expansions, international sales, and the allocation of new resources or re-allocation of existing resources to achieve specific objectives.
